People of George Town

This gallery is a tribute to Penang as it lives and breathes: through its people. Shot on the streets, jetties, kitchens, bazaars, and back alleys of George Town, these images focus on everyday moments that often go unnoticed, yet form the soul of the island.

From the wooden planks of Chew Jetty, life unfolds over the sea. I spot a Buddhist temple worker pausing in devotion, a Chinese artist lost in his craft, and residents greeting curious tourists from their doorsteps. Here, history, culture, and daily routine blend seamlessly.

In Little India, the rhythm intensifies: I photograph the relentless pace of a Mamak kitchen, a florist watering fresh blooms, a butcher mid cut, and the controlled chaos of an Indian supermarket alive with colour. Along Armenian Street, trishaw drivers wait patiently for their next ride while shop owners tend to souvenirs shaped by heritage.

Food weaves through Penang’s identity, and this series pays homage to the heroes behind it. At Gurney Hawker Centre and along the streets of George Town, hands work tirelessly over sizzling woks, smoky grills, and steaming pots. Behind every bowl of noodles, every skewer of satay, famous char kuey teow and nasi lemak, are people whose skill, passion, and discipline keep Penang’s flavours alive.

The Ramadhan Bazaar pulses with colour, aromas, and patience. Stall owners wait calmly for Iftar, families search for the perfect dish to break fast together, and the evening air carries a sense of community, tradition, and grace.

This is Penang - sun soaked and fragrant with spices and street food, shaped by an extraordinary mix of cultures and the daily rhythm of work, prayer, and shared meals.

I invite you to explore these photographs and take a moment to experience the everyday life of Penang.
